winter

First Entry: Rambling Intro

I stumbled upon LJ when looking for fanfics of my favourite shows. Just looking for things to read to occupy my time. I'm a voracious reader but a library isn't an option and buying books gets so expensive. So I found myself on LJ... I've never been one to keep journals or a diary, but then, I've never been in this situation before... The situation being that my husband is off in Iraq working and for the first time in my life, I'm actually alone. No family around, no connections, no nothing. It's very strange. And at times a little intimidating, especially with the prospect of a winter alone out in the country with no one to rely on if I need help. So it's an adventure! At least I have the critters to keep me company, and if necessary, to keep me warm (now I know what a "3 dog night" is!). We'll see what happens and if I start becoming a writer as a result! Who knows.

I have discovered in the first 3 months of being here by myself that living on the Canadian Prairies definitely requires some preparation. I never noticed it when living in a major city, but it's a huge transition from living in a city to living in the country. For example, living in the city, I took it for granted that you turn on a tap and water comes out. Such is not the case anymore. Now, I have to make sure that there is water in the cistern so that there is something available to come out of the tap when turned on! No, we don't even have the luxury of having a well. And believe me, hauling water with the associated frozen taps, ice, and rigid water lines in -40C weather is not fun! But then, having space for my dogs to run, my horses at home, and quiet evenings under the stars in July does make it worthwhile; at least that's what I keep telling myself when I'm peeling frozen wet gloves from my fingers! I have a greater appreciation for my husband for doing this when he was home, and I'll appreciate it more when he does it when he gets back!
